Here at Yami, we have been captivated by Midnight Diner: Tokyo Series since season one! The restaurant’s quiet atmosphere makes you feel like you are a fly on the wall watching people as they enter the diner to enjoy their mouth-watering meals. Neko Manma or “Cat Rice”

It’s not every day you can say you’ve had “cat rice” but that’s exactly what we recommend you should try next time you want a delicious meal without all the hassle.

  • Cat Rice, or Neko Manma, is one of the simplest meals you can create. Consisting of just three ingredients, Cat Rice is made with plain white rice, bonito flakes, and a drizzle of soy sauce.
  • However, if you’re up for the challenge (we mean this sarcastically, of course), then you can add a few more ingredients like fish bones, miso soup, mayonnaise, fresh greens, or simply more seasonings.
  • Keep in mind though, the traditional recipe doesn’t require all the extras…and for good reason. This simple bowl of rice is so tasty that it has easily become one of our favorite go-to meals when in a rush.
  • Fun fact! Legend has it this dish got its name after it was given to cats as extra scraps laying around. But of course, don’t try this at home. It’s a terrible diet for cats, dogs, and other pets. For humans, on the other hand, this dish is irresistible any time of the day.

Ochazuke

This next dish from Episode 3 of Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories is just as simple as Cat Rice.

  • Ochazuke, which translates to “rice with tea”, is as basic as it gets. But don’t worry, the flavor is worth talking about! Here is how you’ll do it: steam a serving of short-grained rice and pour hot brewed tea over it.
  • Easy enough, right? Keep in mind, depending on the amount of tea you add it could become a soup or stew but in either case just as equally delicious.
  • Now, if you want to get fancy, you can add whatever toppings you’d like. We recommend adding ingredients like fresh veggies, seaweed, or shrimp. With a little finesse with your plating, you have easily got yourself an insta-worthy meal that everyone will ask you about.

Potato and Macaroni Salad

Yes, you read that right. Potato and Macaroni salad is our next recommendation from Midnight Diner: Tokyo Series.

  • Only taking about 20 minutes to make, this classic dish is perfect for hot summer days with friends and family or as a side dish at your next potluck.
  • Unlike American potato salad which is usually made with a vinegar base, the Japanese-style potato and macaroni salad calls for Japanese mayonnaise, such as Kewpie Mayo, which makes all the difference! Plus, if you add a little rice vinegar you can give your dish an extra layer of flavor. Overall, this dish is slightly sweeter and has a variety of textures. Hungry yet?
  • However, depending on who you ask, Japanese-style potato and macaroni salad recipes can vary from person to person. Some add corn and carrots, while others add boiled eggs and ham.
  • Whichever toppings you decide to use, it’s definitely a crowd-favorite. We love to find a good-old fashioned recipe that works even after you’ve added your own spin to it, so feel free to get creative and make this dish your own!

Katsudon

Last but not least, we are drooling over the Katsudon served in Episode 6 of Midnight Diner: Tokyo Series.

  • I mean, after all, who can resist pork chops fried in panko bread crumbs over rice? Certainly not us! The crispy pork and warm rice is a match made in heaven I think everyone can agree on.
  • Although it doesn’t sound as simple as our previous dishes, this recipe is quite straightforward as well. Simply season the pork chops, cover in panko bread crumbs, and pan-fry. And just like that, the hardest part of this recipe is done.
  • Then, you’ll caramelize onions with a bit of Japanese soup stock, and add your fried pork and eggs on top. Once the eggs are fully cooked, serve over a bowl of white rice. That’s all it takes!
  • Our favorite part? This super easy and super tasty meal is the perfect comfort food when you’re in the mood for a hearty bowl of rice without all the extra prep work needed with multiple side dishes. Add this to your list of must-tries next time you’re shopping for Japanese ingredients.
