本书定位在深度剖析IT项目上，书中的案例分析和小结内容涉及了经典的项目管理知识体系（PMBOK）、软件行业的过程改进模型（CMMI）、敏捷开发、PRINCE 2等，即将知识领域、项目过程和项目管理成熟度等融合在一起。为了贴近读者的实际工作，本书尽量避免直接使用以上管理理论中的“专业术语”，而更多采用了IT人士所熟知的“业务语言”来描述项目管理中遇到的各类现象和问题，在案例编排上也不受限于经典理论的框架结构（如PMBOK中的知识领域、过程组等）。
本书中所有的案例都是真实的，部分来自项目管理者联盟网站，部分来自作者身边的项目经历（故事中的企业名称和当事人的姓名都是化名）。对于案例中项目管理工作遇到的所有问题，作者都给予了明确、具体的解决方案，对每一个困惑都给予了清晰的解释。表达方式注重趣味性，力图成为一本有观点、有情怀、有故事，既传播了项目管理理念，又分享实践经验的有趣图书。

关于案例的导读说明
本书从第2章开始共有10章58个案例解析。每个案例解析由三部分组成。其中， “案例故事” 介绍项目背景并提出问题，“案例分析” 给出分析和解决方案，“小结”对案例进行引申延展并概要总结。
从第2章开始是本书的“重头戏”，项目经理是项目团队的灵魂，也是本书的主要读者对象。现实中，很多项目经理困惑于自己的权力和职责，对未来的职业发展也感到迷茫。因此，本书首先从“人”的角度探讨项目管理。
第3章至第8章，定位在反映项目层面的问题，笔墨集中在乙方的项目策划、监控、需求、风险、商务、团队和沟通管理等焦点内容，从“过程”和“知识”的角度研究项目管理。
第9章介绍了不可忽视的甲方管理中常见的问题，从“项目发起方”的角度看待项目管理。
第10、11两章，从更高的视角，在企业层面展现项目管理中的问题，如项目管理体系的作用、PMO的定位、多项目管理、管理模式的推广等。这些问题只有放到公司的大环境下去分析才有意义，才会找到解决办法，也就是要从“组织”的角度思考项目管理的真谛。

第4章项目监督和控制——项目计划是项目监控的基础，没计划，监控无意义，有计划不监控，计划就是一纸空文，监控的最终目的是解决问题。本章共有7个案例，讲述和分析了最常见、最普遍的项目失控、项目例会的故事，以及发现问题、解决问题的方法和手段。
第5章项目需求管理——项目的范围是源头，需求管理是根本。本章共有7个案例，讲述和分析了在需求管理中的两大类故事，一是怎么才能获取完整和准确的需求，二是如何看待以及如何应对需求变更。
第6章项目风险管理——项目管理的核心在某种程度上就是风险管理，本章讲述和分析了4个案例故事，有成功的经验，也有失败的教训。
第7章项目干系人管理——PMBOK第5版将干系人管理单独列出独立成章，说明干系人管理的重要性与日俱增。本章讲述和分析了5个案例故事，介绍了识别和分析干系人的通用性方法和手段，以及分析各方干系人利益，获得高层支持的经验之谈。
第8章项目团队建设——团队建设是一个很大的课题，本章选取了5个案例故事，着眼于人力资源规划和矛盾冲突的处理。

第11章项目管理体系——项目管理体系也属于组织级项目管理的内容之一，单独成章，是为了更有针对性地讲述和分析关于项目管理的流程、制度、组织和人的主题，本章收录了6个案例故事。
