Author Description

金克木（1912～2000）字止默，笔名辛竹，安徽寿县人，中国著名梵语学者、诗人、作家，与季羡林、邓广铭、张中行一起被称为“未名四老”。主要著译有学术著作《梵竺庐集》《印度文化余论》，诗集《蝙蝠集》《挂剑空垄》，小说、散文、杂文集《旧巢痕》《难忘的影子》《天竺旧事》《末班车》《孔乙己外传》《风烛灰》等。

读书

其一

对于书籍的读法，大致可以分为两种：一是读“书”，一是读“人”。正像教书也可以分成教“书”和教“学”一样。读“书”是以我为主，我寻材料供我用，和查考辞书类书的目的一样；所以读的书，也无所谓好坏，凡可以供我利用的都要读。这正是写卡片抄材料的记问之学，学得好时，便是淹博。读“人”却不然：读一人的著作，想见其为人，于是尊之为师，敬之如友，研其思想，学其品行，择善而从，不善则改，所注意的是见解，所学习的是做人，不嫌狭隘，但求贯通。这样读书，结果也许只精读一部全集，但确可以受用终身。读“书”能博足以炫人，所失在浅；读“人”而精足以立己，所弊在陋。此外的读书，若不是当课本学技术，就只能算是消遣而已。

其二

“学以致用”是句老话，“不要读死书”是句新话。但从学问的本身说来，无所谓有用无用；而从学的人这方面说来，只要真学就真有用，就是说，至少所学直接对己间接对人都有影响。所以，如果我们不把“用”的范围定得太偏狭，在学习的时候，我们就该事先注意这学习所应有的结果。这样便不能生吞活剥地读书，给人家当收音机。学的经过也就应当大致分做：学——思——行；打个比方说：吸收——消化——营养。

其三

抽象地论读什么书，似乎无益，其实也很有帮助。读专书，专读书，都已近于老生常谈了，实际上奉行的人还是很少。读书人大半还是喜欢东抄西撮杂凑起来的书，只求便捷，不怕肤浅，又喜欢广博而不肯专精。这都是不能牢记着上两条原则的结果。还有一条原则也很重要，便是多读与自己意见不合的书。我们往往翻开一本书后，一看句句都是自己心中要说的话，于是非常痛快，佩服，很高兴地看下去，以为这是正对自己胃口的好书。结果却往往是一无所得，即使有进步也很少。因为书中意见，自己既在读书之前便有，那么读了之后，自然也不过是更坚信或更丰富而已。唯有读与自己意见不合的书，可以使自己瞿然一惊，然后以敌人的态度去观察这本书的意见。结果若是自己被人折服，自然是自己原有的见解不对，从此便更进一步；若自己攻破了书中的理论，也就是自己受到了一次论敌的冲锋，无形中也加强了自己的力量。因此“正合吾意”的书愈多读，愈无进步，愈容易流入偏狭，远不如多读几部不合吾意的书。但这样读书也有两个先决条件：第一是要能批判地读书，有自己存在，不为书所囿；第二是有所为而读书，不要视同看看小说之类的消遣。
