四、水烟业
博爱种植烟叶有600多年的历史，据说从元朝开始传人，明、清大量种植，并用以加工成水烟。水烟销至内蒙古、山西、山东、河北等地；小烟大部分销于当地及邻近诸县，少数运至黄河以南和山西长治等地。清末民初，是博爱水烟生产的盛期，当时全县烟作坊很多，生产水烟的有机房的“运来合”、陈范村的“百顺泉”、下水磨的“明盛公”、清化的“百兴源”、“朋盛公”等；生产旱烟的有清化四街的“恒一德”、六街的“方盛长”、陈范村的“郭兆丰”、机房的“常太源”等。博爱的水烟和旱烟过去都是各闯一路，各销一方。机房“运来合”的水烟，运至桂花城，货到争购一空。“明盛公”的水烟在山东很吃香，每年都有山东老客户来清化订货。“常太源”的小烟在温县和黄河以南很有名气，市上到处争购“常太源”烟。清化的“恒一德”青丝烟，主要销至山西潞安、平襄等地。“方盛长”的二细烟则销于焦作、修武、新乡一带。
由于水烟工业的发展，博爱烟叶的种植面积也越来越大，民国24年（1935）全县烟叶种植面积已达1.5万亩，总产量125万公斤，是当地农民一项重要经济收入。抗战期间，由于交通阻隔和一些水烟资本家的破产，烟市萧条，烟叶种植面积下降到不足1万亩。新中国成立后，烟叶生产虽然有所恢复，但由于大多数水烟庄关闭和吸烟卷者增多，博爱烟叶生产处于逐年下降趋势。1985年烟叶种植面积只有1039亩，总产量12.5万公斤。
博爱烟叶大部种植于县城西北的许良、上庄两乡和柏山乡的一部分，系太行山南麓的洪积平原和丘陵地带。这些地区，土质较好，大部系红垆土和潮垆土，土壤有机含量较高，富钾少磷，因此，适宜于烟叶的生长。特别是上庄乡的皂角树，系丘陵前沿地带，种的烟叶，不仅产量高，而且颜色好，口劲大，名为“嵩三社”烟。这些烟主要制作上等“青丝烟”，清化六街方盛长的青丝烟，专门选用“嵩三社”烟，所以，他们制作的青丝烟，质量较高，在群众中享有较高的声誉。
博爱的烟叶是春季育苗，麦季移栽，九月收摘。按当地群众的经验，认为烟叶的关键是掌握收晒时间，必须选择晴天风好才能收摘，一般是起西北风后再摘烟。烟叶摘掉后用草绳串起来，挂在烟杆上晒约两三天，烟叶开始收缩，10天左右可成，呈青黄色。烟叶晒成后，放在潮润地方还性，叫做“绵烟”。
