卡耐基觉得，这位负责人的话语异常平淡，缺乏热忱，给人的感觉就是一种为工作而工作的，让人丝毫感觉不到热情，因此给他留下了相当不好的印象。
此外，对方既没有明确地说明究竟有多少人，也没有指明卡耐基演讲要以什么为主题，要他如何准备呢？对此，卡耐基肯定是没什么好感。
而第二家研究机构的负责人是这样说的：“恳请卡耐基先生莅临赐教，向我们传授一些中小企业管理者说话的诀窍。听讲人员是管理100名左右员工的企业管理者，预定人数为80人。此次演讲的主要目的，是希望让所有的参会者明白，不能用语言清楚地表达出自己，就无法成为优秀的管理者。希望您能将演讲时间控制在两个小时左右，内容锁定在：学好说话技巧的必要性、掌握好说话技巧的好处以及学好说话技巧的方法三个方面。希望您能给大家带来一场别开生面的演讲，万事拜托了！”卡耐基明显地感到第二家机构的负责人信心十足，明快干练，语言表达思路清晰，向自己传达了高度的热情。更重要的是，对方在卡耐基提出问题之前就解答了所有的疑问，让他有了明确的准备目标，从而使他对于此次演讲也是非常期待。由此可见，这种邀请的方式是很能带给受邀者好感的。
显然，说服别人要讲究技巧，需要遵循一定的步骤，如同行军打仗一样，只有做到步步为营，才能稳中求胜。
1．吸引对方的兴趣和注意力在说服的过程中，为了让对方认同自己的观点或想法，首先要将对方的注意力和关注点集中到自己设定的话题上。利用“这对你来说是非常有利的”、“这件事，你觉得怎么样”之类的话题吸引他的注意力，让他有兴趣并愿意继续听下去。
2．将自己的思想明确地表达出来成功说服的关键因素就是能明白、；隹确、清楚地表达自己的思想。对方是否能够轻松听瞳你的想法和计划，最重要的就是你如何运用语言技巧进行表达。
（1）将你所想表达的话题清楚、明白地表达出来，利用诸如“如此一来肯定能够使情况大有改善的！”之类的话，加深话题，以便让对方充分理解。
（2）为了让自己的表述更加生动，要善于运用比喻、举例等方法加深听者的印象。适当运用比喻和举例，能够使对方产生具体的印象，使枯燥抽象的道理变得简单易懂，使你想要表达的主题变成更加明确或为人熟知的事物。这样，就能在对方的脑海中产生鲜明生动的印象。
（3）说话时声音的大小、语调的高低、语速的快慢、停顿的长短、口齿的清晰度等都是不容忽视的。
（4）说服不只是舌尖上的事，所以，除了语言之外，你同时还必须通过适当的表情、肢体语言作为辅助。
3．以情动人说服之前要准确掌握对方的心理，这样才能有效地打动人心。通过你说服的内容，了解对方对此话题是喜好还是厌恶，是满足还是不满，然后再顺势动之以情，晓之以理，诱之以利，告诉他按照你的建议做的好处，不断地刺激对方的激情和欲望，直到他跃跃欲试为止。
一般而言，人的思维和行动都是由意识控制的，就算受到他人或外界的干扰或强迫，也是不容被改变的。因此，如果想以口服人，必须意识到说服的主角是对方而不是自己。也就是说，说服的目的是借对方之力为自己服务，而不是要压倒对方，因此，以口服人一定要从感情深处出发。
4．为对方指出具体做法做好了前面的准备工作，最后就可以告诉对方应该怎样付诸行动了。你务必要让对方清楚明白他应该做什么、怎样做、做到什么程度最好等。到了这一步，对方通常就会很痛快地按照你说的去做了。
