厦门是我最熟悉的城市，犹如描述一个亲人，我不想陷入考据与细节，而是直抒己见，谈论地理环境和通商开埠对这座岛城精神气质的影响。

城市是人类最恢宏的创造物，深受山川地理、行政建制、国家政策、人口族群、区域文化等因素的制约。而偏处一隅的边陲城市，扎根于当地奇异的地理、历史和风俗之中，感受异族文明的强烈冲击，往往形成自己独特的面貌。每座城市都独一无二，但边城—那些远离父母关爱的孩子，身世沧桑，性格倔强，最让人动情。

有无数种阅读城市的方式，如见闻录、游记、画册、杂感、回忆录、特写、论文、城市史、专题调查、新闻报道等等，我选择了最困难的一种：全景式叙述。这些文章，绝大多数是应《华夏地理》杂志“读城”专栏之约而写的，责任编辑易水十分认真，要求我在一篇万余字的文章里正面讲述一座城市的来龙去脉、独特命运和精神气质。采访和写作过程十分艰辛，但深入了解了这些城市的隐秘之后，便有魂梦相通的感觉，与之变成了亲密的友人。喀什、拉萨等地的每一则新闻，从此都让我揪心。

象雄故都，河西诸城，内陆、边疆和海防城市，收入本书的七篇文章是精心选编出来的，构成一个小小的跨时空群落，从各个角度呈现中华边城的多样性。

从前，我们以一个城市为家，只认识有限的几座邻城。而在全球化的今天，我们旅行，飞机和高铁每日行经许多城市；我们阅读新闻，每天过眼全球无数城市的信息。无意之中，我们都成了城市鉴赏家。茫茫城海，谁曰无情？每个鉴赏家都有心中挚爱，或许这些感动过我的城市，也让你魂牵梦萦。

河西地区战乱频仍，绿洲无常，荒漠里埋藏着无数遗失名字的城池。荒废在高台县大漠里的骆驼城就是一例。这座周长2000余米的长方形大城，论规模超过了张掖、敦煌等郡城，绝非无名之辈。但它到底是古代的哪座城池呢？好几代人为之伤神，最终，现代考古学解决了这个问题：城外的墓葬证实，骆驼城先后曾为汉表氏（是）县城、前凉建康郡城、北凉沮渠蒙逊政权的都城、唐建康军城，唐末从史籍中失踪，被风沙埋没了一千年。

汉唐经营西域，在河西留下了上百座各种类型的城池，最有意思的是，这些城市沿走廊一字排开，像铁链一样高效组织起来，成为连接中原与西域的坚强通道。事实上，它们组成了丝绸之路上的一个个驿站。安史之乱后，少数民族控制了河西走廊，中原王朝被迫另开海上丝绸之路。中西阻隔，驼队断绝，灿若珠宝的河西城市群尽数没落。多少彪炳青史的伟业，沦为大漠里一座座可疑的荒城。

我关注的城市，多数是远离中原王朝的边缘城市，或者边陲城市。相对于中原王朝的政治中心—独一无二的京师、首都、中央之城，这些天高皇帝远的边城自由散漫，个性鲜明，在中国的城市体系里散发出独特的魅力。

自发明了农业之后，人类开始聚集定居，较大一些的聚落形成了城市，但城市之间，差异极大。德国社会学家马克斯·韦伯率先进行了城市类型学研究。他说，欧洲古代城市如雅典、罗马，实际上是军事中心；中国的城市则是政治和行政中心；只有中世纪后期的欧洲城市，才开始形成经济中心，并发育出市民社会，成为现代城市的先驱。

前言我们都是城市鉴赏家

城池是定居民族的防御性建筑，而游牧民族来去如风，很少建城。2013年元宵期间，我和《华夏地理》编辑易水艰苦跋涉，在河西走廊寻访了四五十座古城。在兰州采访李正宇教授时，他告诉我两个规律：第一，汉人建的城都是方形或长方形，不规则的基本上是少数民族建的，比如三角城、椭圆城；第二，古城的大小与等级相关，郡城周长都在1200米以上，县城约1000米，乡城则在400米以内。
