这个游戏设计得很巧妙。有时，参与者正高高兴兴地在奖金最高的房间内点击赚钱，可就在这时，那两扇没有使用的门开始慢慢关闭。除非参与者能及时点击门使之恢复原状，否则那两扇门最终会消失。门闭合的时候，人会变得焦虑不安，他们会竭尽所能地让门保持敞开的状态。但参与者并不想通过这些门出去，他们所在的房间里能得到最多的奖金，没必要到其他的房间去，然而，他们还是尽力挽救这些门。
史恩和艾瑞里对439位二十几岁的人进行了这个测试，绝大多数人都争抢着让门恢复原状，即使点击门损失他们本该赚取的钱也在所不惜（后来游戏规则改变了，点击门不仅要消耗点击次数，还要额外花费6美分）。参与者知道自己所在的房间里能获得最多的奖金，但是他们的行为显示，他们希望其他门保持原样，仅仅为了以防万一。他们的“万一”是什么呢？

这位老太太还是一脸的不解，露出为难的表情，说道：“但是，你不可能事事兼得，对吗”一语惊醒梦中人，那位老太太带着清晰浓重的英国口音所提出的建议，适用于很多场合。在随后的几个月里，M和我经常践行这个宝贵的建议，比如说，怎样度过星期五的晚上，晚餐吃什么，要不要申请研究生，等等。每当这时，我的耳畔就会响起老太太那喜欢用降调疑问句的英国腔。我和M后来分手了，这旬箴言就封存在我们两人彼此的分手档案中，不再提起，但我还是经常用这句话来提醒自己。如果说，25岁之前我的人生信条是“来者不拒”——放手去做，敢于更多尝试，那么25岁以后，我的人生信条则变成了“你不能事事兼得，对吗”。懂得拒绝，这对我来说意义重大，因为这个宣言意味着一个成年人认识到自己时间的宝贵。的确，与只见过几次的男孩保持朋友关系，或者去参加一个和我没什么交情的大学女同学的生日聚会，这些事表面看起来很不错，就好像我们听说一个海滨乡村很美，就决定去看看，表面看来也很不错，但那里在南边，而我要去的是北方。

一）曾被误解的新一代年轻人
20几岁的年轻人，一度被认为是这样的：
他们懒惰而漫无目的，赖在家里与父母同住，黏着家人白吃白喝，还想保持这种过惯了的优哉游哉好日子；他们意识不到勤力工作的重要性，一开始就想一步登天，从高层做起；自以为聪明绝顶，胜任工作绰绰有余；父母把他们宠坏了，平常小事父母也赞不绝口；教练或老师也对他们宠爱有加，只是登台稍露头角，就颁发奖杯来庆功祝贺；觉得穿着拖鞋去上班没问题，甚至去白宫见总统也无伤大雅。
在这里我要说，这些说法都错了，错得离谱。所谓80、90后的年轻人，绝非像上面说的那样不堪，而且他们绝对是非常有勇气的一代。如果非要说他们有什么错的话，那也是这个时代造成的。
20几岁的人变得“臭名远扬”，媒体实在难辞其咎。我觉得自己也有责任。2010年夏天，我为《纽约时报》杂志（The New York Times Magazine）撰文论及20几岁的人。文中着重提到克拉克大学（Clark University ）心理学家杰弗里·阿内特（Jeffrey Arnett）的著作，他认为18至29岁是一个独特的成长阶段，正如由于20世纪社会与经济的变革，出现了青春期这个特殊成长阶段，21世纪社会与经济的变革也促成了这一新阶段的出现。阿内特称这一阶段为成人初显期（emerging adulthood），与这个名词相对的也有很多类似的称呼，比如说“有成人味的人”（adultescents），“小大人”（kidults），“大小孩 ”（man-children），“ 自我的一代”（Generation Me）。“成人初显期”这个称呼既表达出阿内特对这一阶段孩子的尊重，也描述出这些年轻人正在面对的情感上的挣扎状态。阿内特指出，正如青春期具有特定的心理特点，成人初显期也是同样，其特征是：探索自己的身份，具有不稳定性，以自我为中心，感觉左右为难，却怀有强烈的理想主义幻想——阿内特将这种幻想描述为“万事皆有可能的观念”。
阿内特本人对这些小大人的评价还算公平，但我的文章标题是“20几岁的年轻人到底怎么了？”这个标题激起了几乎所有人对这年龄段的人的愤怒。这篇文章像病毒一样蔓延开去，数周时间，针对该文章而向《纽约时报》杂志发电邮的人不计其数；尽管该文经过多次转载，引发各样讨论，可是文章标题（事实上是编辑替我加上的）已经奠定了负面的基调。那篇文章的标题，只代表了上一代谴责的声音。当然你是知道的，20几岁的人通常比较“懒”，看完标题，就不看下文了。
二）20几岁的人到底怎样呢？
当然，我了解年轻人的感受，也对他们寄予同情。我意识到一个苦涩的事实：
对很多年轻人而言，他们似乎感觉永远也不会像父辈一样手头宽裕，一帆风顺。而且如今父辈们的生活充满着离婚、毫无出路的工作和恼人的例行公事，让年轻一代看了就望而却步，不想长大。另一方面，像Facebook、Twitter、Foursquare社交网站上的市长选举、发微博等新时代的特征，都改变了今天年轻人对自我、对同辈和日常活动进行思考的方式。而在我之前的那篇文章中，对这些因素都没有提及。总之，我忽略了一点——他们只是想知道接下来自己该怎样生活，比如今天的年轻人遇到的经济难题：学生贷款、信用卡债务、找工作困难、结婚难，或不容易付起房钱。

我和妈妈一起花了数个小时进行辩论，对本书的遣词造句甚至细枝末节进行讨论，所以，凡出现在这里的文字基本上都是我们达成一致的结果。但是有时我们觉得还是各说各话比较好，这样你就能在相应位置读到我们各自的观点，同时也知道我们看法上的细微差别在哪儿。
至于我是谁，妈妈已经说过，我是她的小女儿。（也许杰西是对的，和妈妈一起写书是件疯狂的事情。）我今年27岁，算是长大成人了。我一个人住在布鲁克林的单体公寓中，这是自大学二年级起我的第八处住所了。我曾与女性朋友同住，也与男性朋友、男朋友或陌生人合租过。我自己支付各种开销费用。我的工作提供养老金，可以干到退休，我的名片上有雕刻图案，上面写着“纽约时报”字样。这是我2006年大学毕业后，六年里实习或兼职除外的第五份工作。
有趣的是，如果以结婚生子作为衡量是否成人的标准，那么我还远不算成人。我的朋友有人和我一样，也有的朋友在很多人生大事上颠三倒四：迅速步入婚姻围城，职业生涯进步缓慢，还有的朋友处在不同的极端。我认识不少人像“跳房子”游戏一样频频改变主意，觉得什么好，一拍脑门就改主意，我也认识一些人多年来一直知道自己到底想要什么，一直沿着笔直、肯确的人生路直行，抵达目标。文章中我会谈到他们，也会谈到我自己。
